Pièce de derrière (2007)
The macro-structural syntax of »Pièce de derrière« is determined by a strong hurricane, that was recorded from the inside of a backroom for a duration of more than two and a half hours. Its subtle upcoming, the scary climax with its infrasonic force and the gradual decaying created an unpredictable expression that was full of suspense – appearing in a musical way, not able to be ignored. I began to decompose the reference material by analyzing different layers in time (as measures, rhythmic patterns, permutations), strength (as envelopes, fluctuations in volume) and spectral behavior (as pitch-progression, modulations, similarities) in order to distillate its musical scenes and motives. Original phrasing in their horizontal and vertical evidence were then rearranged, and the detected micro-structural elements were generated or formed by process-oriented strategies. The total duration of the "performance of nature" was condensed on a scale of 1:12.
I decode this technique – i.e. musical reconstruction of a given taped happening – as Homologous or Convergent Composition. Used software: Max/MSP, LiSa, Spear.
